Little Blue Daisies–will eating them really make you beautiful?

My mother was born in 1930 in a little community called Paris, Mississippi. When I was a child, she told me that when she was a little girl, she ate little blue daisies. According to Mama, it was common knowledge at the time: Eating little blue daisies in the spring will make you beautiful.

Well, I can’t guarantee this to be true. However, it seemed to work for her. My mother was one beautiful woman. I miss her dearly.

The flower in question here is called Houstonia pusilla. It grows wild in Mississippi and is one of the first harbingers of spring. It is native to the United States and grows in the southeastern and central areas and is found from Texas to Florida. It is also found all the way north to Deleware and South Dakota.

According to chesapeakebay.net, the Bluet flowers are edible. Having said this, I am NOT recommending that you eat them! I am only passing on a beloved story that my mother used to tell me. So, eat at your own risk.

After posting this, I remembered another story about this tiny wildflower that makes it special to me.

I had an old aunt, my grandfather’s sister. Aunt Glennie was a slightly build lady, and could touch her toes at the age of 80. She and Uncle Fed could not have children. Her favorite color was blue. So I guess had she ever had a baby, it would have been a boy!

One spring when I was a child, they were up from the Delta visiting family here in the hills. Uncle Fed went with me on a walk around the farm. He did something that impressed me so as a child–I will never forget!

Uncle Fed, then in his late 70s, got down on one knee and gathered a bouquet of these tiny blue daisies for her. I bet he gathered at least 25! I remember her smile when he presented them to her.

I have to wonder, how many men out there today love their wives this much? Would you do this for your wife?

Would your husband make this sweet gesture to show his love for you? I hope so!

This is a photo of my Aunt Glennie Henry made at Moon Lake, Mississippi delta circa 1930s. She is the lady in the hat.
